Wasps are more than just a nuisance, they can be a potential hazard, especially if they decide to build a nest on your property. While their role in pollination and pest control is beneficial, a wasp infestation near your home is something you’ll want to address quickly and safely. Also, don’t hesitate to call in professionals from Saela Pest Control if you lack knowledge about dealing with wasps.

Here are five effective ways to remove wasps from your property and keep them from coming back.

    1. Identify and Remove Nests Early

One of the best ways to tackle a wasp problem is to stop it at the source. Wasps often start building small nests in spring, which can quickly grow larger as their colony expands. Identifying and removing these nests early is key to preventing a bigger problem.

To safely remove a small nest, suit up in protective clothing and wait until dusk or early morning when wasps are less active. Then, spray the nest with a wasp-specific insecticide or use a soapy water solution (a mix of two tablespoons of dish soap and water). The soap clogs the wasps’ breathing passages, effectively killing them. Once all activity has stopped, carefully remove the nest using a long stick or broom, and dispose of it in a sealed bag.

Never attempt to remove large nests on your own. If the nest is bigger than a grapefruit or located in a hard-to-reach spot, it’s time to call a professional.

    2. Use Natural Repellents

For those who prefer non-chemical solutions, there are several natural remedies to deter wasps. Essential oils, such as peppermint, lemongrass, and clove, are particularly effective in repelling them.

Mix 10-15 drops of essential oil with water in a spray bottle and apply it to areas where wasps tend to hover, such as eaves, corners, or outdoor furniture. You can also soak cotton balls in the oil mixture and place them around your patio or garden to keep wasps away.

Another option is to use a natural wasp deterrent, such as a decoy nest. Wasps are territorial and typically avoid areas where other colonies are established. Hanging decoy nests near entryways or outdoor spaces can help keep them from settling nearby.

    3. Keep Food and Trash Secure

Wasps are attracted to sweet or protein-rich foods, making your outdoor meals and garbage cans prime targets. To reduce their interest, make sure food is covered, and clean up crumbs or spills promptly during outdoor gatherings.

When it comes to trash, use bins with tight-fitting lids and line them with sturdy bags. Regularly empty outdoor bins, especially during warmer months, to minimize odors that attract wasps.

    4. Seal Entry Points

Prevent wasps from nesting on or inside your property by making it harder for them to find entry points. Inspect your home’s exterior for gaps or cracks in walls, siding, or windows. Seal these areas with caulk or weather stripping.

Pay extra attention to vents, chimneys, and other openings. You can install fine mesh screens over these points to block wasps while still allowing airflow. By eliminating access, you reduce the chances of a wasp infestation inside your home.

    5. Hire Professional Pest Control

Sometimes, dealing with wasps can be dangerous, especially if you’re allergic, the infestation is severe, or the nest is in a challenging location. This is when it’s best to call a pest control professional.

Experts have the tools and experience to safely remove nests, handle aggressive wasps, and recommend strategies to prevent them from coming back. Many pest control services also offer eco-friendly treatments, which are ideal if you’re concerned about chemical use.

    Conclusion

Dealing with wasps doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. By identifying nests early, using natural repellents, securing food, and sealing entry points, you can take proactive steps to keep wasps away. When necessary, don’t hesitate to seek professional help for a safe and lasting solution.
